The museum was inaugurated in 1975. This place was originally used as a palace, and it served as family residence for 25 years.
The museum is being reconstructed with new design, so currently it is closed. It will reopen in 2014.

The museum showcases more than 3000 exhibits including Islamic art, coins, artefacts, weapons, bedouin jewellery, traditional doors and woodwork, manuscripts, books and fossils, including dinosaur eggs.
The museum also has collection of classic cars from around the world including 100+ models from every major car manufacturer. The premises also houses a variety of animals and game, including the rare oryx.
The museum belongs to Sheikh Faisal, who is great great grandson of Jassim, who defeated the Ottomans in battle, and is regarded by some as the founder of Qatar.
